E' stato raggiunto e appena superato il milione di firme nella petizione internazionale 8hours che chiede di vietare il trasporto di animali vivi diretti al macello per tragitti superiori alle 8 ore all'interno dell'Unione Europea.
 Questa campagna, lanciata da Animals’ Angels (organizzazione internazionale con sede a Francoforte che ha documentato centinaia di casi di gravi sofferenze patite dagli animali trasportati) insieme al Parlamentare Europeo danese Dan Jørgensen, è una straordinaria campagna di civiltà e senz'altro fra le più ampie e sentite nella storia europea.

 La lunga durata dei viaggi degli animali destinati al macello nell’UE spesso causa loro gravi sofferenze, come più volte segnalato dagli investigatori di Animals’ Angels. L’attuale legislazione europea rende possibile il trasporto degli animali anche per parecchi giorni, sebbene sia scientificamente provato come le sofferenze degli animali aumentino con il prolungarsi del viaggio.

“Questo è un momento storico per coloro che hanno a cuore gli animali. L’appello di un milione di cittadini non può essere facilmente ignorato dalle istituzioni europee”, dice Christa Blanke, fondatrice e direttrice di Animals’ Angels. “Ma questa è solo una pietra miliare fondamentale di una campagna che avrà fine solo quando il trasporto su lunga distanza degli animali destinati al macello sarà vietato all’interno dell’Unione Europea. Nel corso di molti anni, noi abbiamo documentato le sofferenze degli animali trasportati in Europa, e abbiamo visto che tutti i miglioramenti apportati alle regole per il trasporto sono insufficienti se il trasporto su lunga distanza continua a essere permesso.”

“La realtà è che quello che avviene oggi sulle strade europee è crudeltà verso gli animali. Questo deve finire. La Commissione Europea ha fino adesso sorvolato sulla richiesta di nuove regole per il trasporto animale, ma sarà difficile per la Commissione ignorare un milione di cittadini,” dice il Parlamentare Europeo danese Dan Jørgensen, che aggiunge: “Io ho segnalato molte volte al commissario responsabile per il benessere animale, John Dalli, che le regole per il trasporto animale necessitano di essere cambiate. Sfortunatamente egli non vede la necessità di rispondere in modo appropriato a questo appello. Ma si sbaglia, e dovrebbe agire immediatamente. Se non lo fa, dovrà spiegare ai cittadini dell’Unione Europea perché insiste nel permettere che queste crudeltà continuino.”

La raccolta di un milione di firme di cittadini dell’UE è parte di una più estesa campagna (www.8hours.eu ) che chiede un limite di 8 ore per i viaggi degli animali destinati al macello. La campagna è anche sostenuta da 109 Parlamentari Europei, provenienti da 19 stati membri ed appartenenti a tutti gli schieramenti politici. Inoltre, 119 Parlamentari Europei hanno finora firmato la Dichiarazione Scritta 49/2011 del Parlamento Europeo alla fine di novembre che chiede un limite di 8 ore per il trasporto di animali vivi.

Note:

Il documento principale dell’attuale legislazione europea che regola il trasporto di animali vivi è il Regolamento CE 1/2005. Essa permette che cavalli, altri equini e suini possano essere trasportati per 24 ore, riposare per 24 ore e poi ripartire. Bovini, ovini e capre possono essere trasportati per 14 ore, riposare per 1 ora, essere trasportati per ulteriori 14 ore, riposare per 24 ore e poi ripartire. Vitelli da latte, agnelli, puledri e maialini possono essere trasportati per 9 ore, riposare per 1 ora, essere trasportati per ulteriori 9 ore, riposare per 24 ore e poi ripartire. Questi cicli possono essere ripetuti indefinitamente.

Il Parlamento Europeo ha già richiesto una limitazione al trasporto nel 2001: “La durata del trasporto dovrebbe essere limitata ad un massimo di 8 ore o ad una distanza di 500 km nel caso di bovini, equini, ovini e suini che non siano destinati all’allevamento o ad attività sportive.” (Risoluzione del Parlamento Europeo, adottata il 13 gennaio 2001).

Earlier today, the millionth signature arrived on the www.8hours.eu website. This massive mobilisation of European citizens is calling for an end to long-distance journeys for animals sent for slaughter in the European Union.

This campaign, launched by Animals’ Angels - an international organisation which has documented hundreds of cases of severe suffering endured by transported animals - together with Danish MEP Dan Jørgensen, is one of the largest animal welfare campaigns ever conducted in Europe.

The long duration of the journeys of animals destined for slaughter in EU often causes them intense suffering, as has been consistently reported over the years by Animals’ Angels investigators. Current EU legislation makes it possible for animals to be transported for several days, even though it is scientifically proven and acknowledged by the Commission that the animals’ suffering increases with the duration of the journey.

“This is a historic moment for all those who care for animals. The call of one million citizens cannot be easily ignored by the EU institutions” - said Christa Blanke, founder and Director of Animals’ Angels. “But this is just a fundamental milestone in a campaign that will end only when long-distance journeys of animals sent for slaughter are banned in the EU. We have been documenting the suffering animal transports around Europe over many years, and we have seen that all improvements of transport rules are insufficient if long-distance journeys continue to be allowed”.

“In reality what goes on today on the European roads is animal cruelty. This has to be stopped. The European Commission has so far overheard the demand for new rules for animal transports. But it will be difficult for the Commission to ignore one million citizens” - said Danish MEP Dan Jørgensen, and adds: “I have made the signal to the responsible commissioner for animal welfare, John Dalli, many times, that the rules for animal transports need to be changed. Unfortunately he does not see the need to respond properly to this call. But he is wrong, and he should act now. If not he will have to explain to the EU citizens why he insists on letting this cruelty go on”.

The collection of one million signatures from EU citizens is part of a larger campaign (www.8hours.eu) asking for a maximum overall 8-hour limit for the journeys of animals sent for slaughter. The campaign is also supported by 109 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from 19 member states and all political groups. Furthermore, 119 MEPs have so far signed Written Declaration 49/2011 tabled in the European Parliament at the end of November calling for an 8-hour limit for live animal transports.

Notes:

The main piece of European legislation currently regulating live animal transport is EC Regulation 1/2005. This allows horses, other equines and pigs to be transported for 24 hours, then have a 24-hour rest period and then start again; cattle, sheep and goats can be transported for 14 hours, then a 1-hour rest, then transported for a further 14 hours, then a 24-hour rest and then start again; unweaned calves, lambs, foals and piglets can be transported for 9 hours, then a 1-hour rest, then transported for 9 hours, then a 24-hour rest and then start again. These cycles can be repeated indefinitely.

The European Parliament demanded a limitation of transport time already in 2001: “The duration of transportation should be limited to a maximum of 8 hours or a distance of 500 km in the case of cattle, horses, sheep and pigs that are not intended for special breeding or sporting purposes.” (Resolution of the European Parliament, adopted on 13 January 2001 in Strasbourg).
